NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. (WIVB) - A big boost is on the way to the local economy. The U.S. Navy has awarded Calspan a five and a half million dollar contract.

Over the next few months, engineers at the Niagara Falls Research Unit will transform the Saab 340 airplane into a flying classroom for Navy test pilots.

"It'll house an F16 radar on the nose, a radar doom coming out of the belly. And in the back, there will be a cockpit, much like a fighter cockpit would be where you'll operate the sensors," explained test pilot, David Culbertson.

The three year contract will secure jobs at Calspan and could add new jobs down the line.
